J.C. MooreI went strolling in the washateria in downtown Rolling Fork one afternoon to wash some clothes. The washateria was full of friendly black folks, and I knew that Rolling Fork was the hometown of Muddy Waters. Might be some wanna be Muddys around here, I figured, so I asked a kid, "Hey, any blues singers around here?"

"I know one," another kid answered. Before I could reply, the kid turned around, said, "I'll go get him," and zipped out the door, jumped on a bicycle and was gone like a flash.

A minute or two later, the fellow in this picture drove up in a beat-up old car and got out with that guitar in his hand. And right there in front of the Rolling Fork Washateria I had a damned fine blues concert.

His name is J.C. Moore, and he lives in Rolling Fork. J.C. has a sister married to a fellow named Morganfield who had a very famous brother. Does that ring a bell?

To make a long story short, J.C. knew every word to every Muddy Waters song ever recorded. He sat on that stool and sang them all. Then he added some Willie Dixon and lots of Jimmy Reed. Somewhere between Muddy and Willie we broke out the tall-boy Budweisers, and along about the end of Jimmy Reed I was doing the singing while J.C. did the playing. All I can say now is, Well, I had a wonderful time while washing my clothes.

If y'all are heading up or down Highway 61, I'd make sure there's some dirty towels on the back seat in case y'all pass through Rolling Fork.
